Named in honor of Mr. Edwin W. Chittum, who had served as the Superintendent of Schools for the City of Chesapeake, the school first opened its doors in 1959. It originally served grades one through six. Today, however, the school primarily serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

E. W. Chittum Elementary School has a strong reputation for academic excellence. A strong teaching faculty and a highly supportive community have helped to maintain high standards and academic success for all the students.
