State DECA Event

Colin M. and Alex C. placed 2nd on the DECA Quiz Bowl Test placing them in the semi-finals at the State Competition, and placed 3rd overall.

Megan M. and Patrick S. placed 1st on the Role play in Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making

Daisa C. and D'Wayne W. placed 4th on the Role play in Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making

Hannah O. was an overall runner-up in the Financial Literacy Promotion Plan

Taylor B. was an overall runner-up in the Entrepreneurship Promotion Plan she also ran for and was elected the Region Vice President for the State of Virginia.

Debate Team

We would like to congratulate the Grassfield Debate team for their outstanding performance at Districts this year. They placed in all three categories, Rachel A. earned 3rd place in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Olivia M. and Brittany W. earned 3rd place in Public Forum Debate, while Josh P. and Nathan W. took second place in public forum, and finally Nathan B. and Alex W. earned second place in Policy Debate. As a team, Grassfield Earned second place overall.

Forensics Regional Tournament

The forensics team participated in the Regional competition at Indian River High school. Brianna C. and Angel N. placed 2nd in Humorous Duo Interpretation, while Shayna L. and Kaitlyn T. placed 1st in Serious Duo Interpretation!

Indoor Colorguard Competition

The Grassfield High School Indoor Guard Competed in Northern VA with 51 other units.  Our colorguard won their class and also had the HIGHEST SCORE of the day!!!!

State Swim Meet

At the state swim meet Kelsey Goodin dropped 6 seconds, swimming a personal best in the 400 M Freestyle. Curtis Stallings broke a school record in the 50 meter freestyle with a time of 24.58. Madison Harris swam personal bests in the 100 Meter Freestyle and the 100 Meter Breaststroke.

Drama Regional Competition

The Grassfield HS Theatre Company competed in the VHSL Regional Theatre Festival. The Theatre Company's production of "The Imaginary Invalid" placed 3rd in the Festival. Way to go, Theatre Company!

SED Wrestling Champions

Congratulations to the Grassfield High School Wrestling team for capturing the 2011 SED Championship this past weekend. Nine of Fourteen Grizzly wrestlers advanced to the regional tournament by placing in the Top 4 of their weight class. The Grizzlies had 3 champions in sophmore Camden Anderson, freshman Taylor Misuna and senior Ryan Hoagland. Ryan Fairbee was runner up, while Greg Cottrell and Ryan Waters placed 3rd. Jordan Jefferies, Taylor White and CJ Dick finished 4th. Vintavius Johnson is a regional alternate finishing 5th.

SED Swimming and Diving Champions

District Champ titles were earned by Curtis Stallings, Keanu Delgado, Austin Schnarrs, and Taylor McLemore. Curtis Stallings finished first in the 50 freestyle and was touched out by .06 seconds earning runner up in the 100 Breaststroke. 3rd place finishes were earned by Madison Harris in the 100 Freestyle, Keanu Delgado in the 50 Freestyle, and the Mens 200 Medley Relay of Keanu Delgado , Curtis Stalling, James Goldade, and Austin Schnarrs. Other great performances were shown by James Goldade, Colin Miller, Josh Ledoux, Bronte Scoggins, Hannah Ogden, Kelsey Goodin, Bailey Stewart, Hunter Richardson, Avery Nelson, Johnny Newell, Kyle Welch, Dylan McPherson, and Sean Harrington. Good Luck to these swimmers and divers at the region meet at Old Dominion University.

TSA News

Tanner Rowell, who competed in "Technical Sketching and Design" at the state competition for TSA, has won a recurring $500 scholarship.

First Amendment Cartoon Contest

Hannah Carlson, has been awarded an honorable mention in the First Amendment Cartoon Contest, co-sponsored by the California Administrative Office of the Courts and the Constitutional Rights Foundation. The illustration was selected from over 850 submissions for recognition in the High School, Single Panel category.

As a winner of this national contest, the artwork is featured on the website, www.courtsed.org

Tidewater Builders Association

Congratulations to Corey O'Donnell who took first place and a $2000 scholarship from his entry in the 2010 Young Designers' Competition from the Tidewater Builders' Association.

State Bar Essay Competition

State Debate Tournament

Eli Knittel and Jacob Bosley earned 3rd place in the AAA Contemporary Policy Debate State Debate Tournament. This was a very competitive field; they went up against the power houses of Northern Virginia and represented GFHS and CPS extremely well. Both are seniors so this is a great way for them to close this chapter on their high school debate experience. Eli and Jacob competed very hard and showed great sportsmanship throughout the tournament. We are all very proud of them.

TSA State Conference

During the weekend of  April 22-24, 2500 students traveled to Vienna,VA to compete in 40 different events at the State level competition for TSA. Eleven of those participants were grizzlies with the following results:

Grassfield High School received the “Century Award” and took 2ndplace in the “Chapter Excellence” Award.

FBLA State Leadership Conference

Grassfield High School received recognition in the following areas at the FBLA State Leadership Conference in Reston this past weekend.

GFHS Choirs Receive Superior Ratings

Congratulations to the three GFHS choirs who participated in the Chesapeake Choral Festival on Saturday, March 27. The Freshmen Choir received three superiors and an excellent for a overall "Superior" and both the Chamber and Varsity Singers received straight superior scores from all 4 judges in each of their performance.

 Grizzly Band

We are pleased to report that all of the concert band students performed exceptionally well at the 2010 District IV Band Festival.

The 9th Grade Band received an Excellent Rating, while the Concert and Symphonic Bands received Superior Ratings (the highest rating possible).

With Superior Ratings at both Concert and Marching Band State Assessments, the Grassfield Band program, for the 2nd year in a row, is designated as a "Virginia Honors Band."

DECA Awards

Grassfield High School DECA also received recognition as a "Super-Star" chapter for achieving Gold Level membership Status

Debate Team Results

Grassfield had one team qualify for states (Eli K., Jacob B.). They earned 2nd place in contemporary policy. Both are 12th graders; this is Eli's first year debating.

Additionally, Amanda C. (12th grader; first year debating) earned 13th in congress and will be considered an alternate to states.

Congratulations to the debate team who competed at the District tournament this past weekend. Jacob B. and Eli K. are district champions in Contemporary Policy, Michael M. and Alex W. placed fourth in Classic policy and are Regional Alternates, Trevor R. placed 5th in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and is the regional alternate, and finally Kiana R. received the second highest total of speaker points for Lincoln Douglas Debate. We wish our Debating Grizzlies good luck as they move onto Regionals March 26 and 27.

 The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of 1,600 Black American high school seniors on September 30, 2009 who were designated Semifinalists in the 46th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program.

2009 Theatre State Competition

 

On Saturday, March 21, the GFHS Theatre Company traveled to Charlottesville, VA, for the VHSL AAA State Theatre Festival. Their production of "The Pearl" was outstanding! Two GFHS Actors received Best Actor Awards: Alex S. for his portrayal of Kino, and Courtney J. for her portrayal of Juana, and both actors were given the HIGHEST ratings in the festival.

In addition, the GFHS Theatre Company's production of "The Pearl" received FIRST PLACE IN THE STATE!!! The GFHS Theatre Company is Grassfield's FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM!!!!! Congratulations to all members of the Cast and Crew of "The Pearl." You've made history here at Grassfield!!!

2009 FBLA State Leadership Conference

Grassfield FBLA attended the State Leadership Conference in Reston, VA over Spring Break. Congratulations to Jay C., a senior, on his 1st Place victory in the Impromptu Speaking event. Congratulations to Daniel B., a freshman in our Technology Academy, on his 1st Place victory in the Introduction to Technology Concepts category.
Both students advance to the Future Business Leaders of America's National Leadership Conference this summer in Anaheim, CA.

Congrats to our 2009 Grizzly Wrestling Team

The Grassfield Wrestling team went undefeated with a 19-0 dual meet record. We won the regular season district title defeating Great Bridge (first loss since 2001) and the district tournament title defeating Great Bridge and snapping a 24 year old winning streak. We then went on to place 2nd in the Eastern Region and 4th in the AAA State Tournament. At the state tournament we crowned 2 champions and had 3 other wrestlers placing in the top 8.

Andrew Clement - State Champion at 171lbs.

Cole Louks - 5th place at 130 lbs

Kevin Mahoney - 5th place at 215lbs.

Tucker Spruill - 8th place at 160lbs.

Grizzly Swim Team

Six swimmers and divers participated in the state swimming and diving meet this past weekend at George Mason University. All swimmers swam personal best times. Here are the individual honors:
Kelsey Goodin dropped 8 seconds in the 500 freestyle giving her a junior national cut
Kristen Zielinski dropped time in both the 100 fly and 100 freestyle.
Dylan Quinn swam a 23 flat in the 50 freestyle
Tim Johnson finished strong in the 500 freestyle.
Senior Evan Siebring qualified for finals placing 11th in the 100 freestyle.
James Wheeler finished 16th in the diving competition.

Technology Academy Grant

On February 27 the GFHS Technology Academy was awarded an Instructional Grant from the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation. Lisa Tworek wrote the grant proposal and was awarded a check in the amount of $450.00 to purchase a Smartboard Airliner. Mrs. Tworek currently teaches the ninth grade IT Fundamentals Technology Academy class. Congratulations Mrs. Tworek!!!

The Interact Club sponsored the Get It Together Buckle Up challenge and GHS won first place with 95.5% of our students buckling up! The Club won $400 to be used towards safe school initiatives.

The After Prom Party Committee won an Honor Roll award from the Virginia State Police Association. This is presented to groups who sponsored safe, alcohol and drug free all-night celebrations for after prom. There were 20 winners from across the state with GHS being the only Chesapeake school to win. The prize for being named a winner is a $500 donation to the After Prom Party.
