Congratulations to the Hickory High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble!
They were recently named the champions of the Winter Guard International - Percussion Scholastic Concert Open Class. The award is considered a world class championship, as competitors from the U.S., Europe and Japan participated. Winter Guard International is the leading organization promoting indoor color guard and percussion ensemble competitions. Kudos to these students for an exceptional honor!

Congratulations to these Chesapeake Public Schools students for winning the Annual Elie Wiesel Writing Competition and the 2012 Elie Wiesel Writing and Visual Arts Competition!
Four students in the Pre-International Baccalaureate program, along with their teacher, Marianne McMillin at Oscar Smith High School, have placed in the Annual Elie Wiesel Writing Competition sponsored by the Holocaust Commission of the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater. Sophomores Payton Baril and Hannah Habeeb placed first and second respectively in the Senior Essay Division, and sophomores Akiya Soni and Luis Parrales placed first and third respectively in the Senior Poetry Division. The competition was open to all students from private and public schools in the Tidewater area to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and to promote peace and social justice. The students were recently honored at a special ceremony at Temple Beth El.

Matthew Lowry and Andy Zheng, 8th graders at Crestwood Middle School, took 1st place in the Junior Multimedia Competition. Stephen Greiling, an 8th grade student from Western Branch Middle, won Honorable Mention in the Junior Poetry Division.

Students at Chesapeake Public Schools will find a new, locally-created recipe on their school menus this month: the Apple-Pie Cheese Flatbread Sandwich. This sweet and savory breakfast or lunch sandwich uses the new Schwan's Cheese Flatbread Sandwich as the base for a healthy and fun entree.

The culinary team from Hickory High School created the recipe as part of a district-wide contest developed by Erin Thacker, RD, Nutrition and Wellness Educator and Joanne Kinsey, M.S., SNS, Director of School Nutrition Services for Chesapeake School Nutrition Services. Top priority for Kinsey and the Chesapeake School Nutrition Services team is providing students a variety of great tasting, nutritious foods that they can enjoy with their friends as they take a much-needed break in their days.

Mrs. Andrea Vail, SCA Advisor and Student Activities Coordinator from Grassfield High School
Mrs. Andrea Vail, SCA Advisor and Student Activities Coordinator from Grassfield High School, was honored as Virginia's Advisor of the Year - the top award presented by the state, at the Virginia Student Council Association's State Convention. She has served as Grassfield's SCA Advisor since 2007 when the school opened.

Chesapeake Recognizes the 2012 Teachers of the Year
Forty-seven Chesapeake teachers, each representing their individual schools, were recognized at the 42nd Teacher of the Year Ceremony. From the forty-seven teachers, four were selected as the Elementary, Middle, High, and Overall Teachers of the Year.

Mrs. Kathy Galford, Overall Teacher of the Year
The Overall Teacher of the Year is Mrs. Kathy Galford, a sixth-grade English teacher from Greenbrier Middle School. Mrs. Galford received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Old Dominion University. Mrs. Galford has served as a writer of the school division’s gifted education curriculum and was featured in a training video on differentiated instruction for Chesapeake Public Schools. Mrs. Galford has twenty-three years of experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Mrs. Cherri D. Wilson, Elementary Teacher of the Year

Selected as the Elementary Teacher of the Year is Mrs. Cherri D. Wilson, a fifth-grade teacher from E. W. Chittum Elementary School. Mrs. Wilson received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from James Madison University. She has fifteen years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.

Ms. Kristen M. McInerney, Middle School Teacher of the Year
The Middle School Teacher of the Year is Ms. Kristen M. McInerney from Great Bridge Middle School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Niagara University in New York and her master’s degree from The George Washington University. Ms. McInerney, an eighth-grade Spanish teacher, has five years of teaching experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
Mrs. Monica Agudelo, Secondary Teacher of the Year
The High School Teacher of the Year is Mrs. Monica Agudelo from Grassfield High School. She received her bachelor’s degree from Mary Washington College and is currently working on her master’s degree from Virginia Tech. She is an earth science teacher with eight years of experience, all of which have been in Chesapeake.
