Governor Terence R. McAuliffe has signed a Certificate of Recognition declaring January 25-31, 2015, as Virginia Principals Appreciation Week.

Please join us acknowledging the tireless efforts of our school principals across the Commonwealth and especially the principals of Chesapeake Public Schools. The role of the principal as the instructional leader of the school is critically important to ensure students are provided the opportunity to learn. Our principals work diligently to help students and teachers excel, and their leadership and hard work are essential to the success of our schools. They deserve all the recognition and praise we can give them.

Dusti Harrell - Division 6A Cheer Coach of the Year
 Congratulations to Dusti Harrell, from Grassfield High School, for being recognized as the Division 6A Cheer Coach of the Year.
Congratulations to Dusti Harrell, from Grassfield High School, for being recognized as the Division 6A Cheer Coach of the Year. Under the leadership of Coach Harrell, the Grizzlies cheer team has captured four southeastern district titles, two conference championships, and five regional championship titles, as well as advancing to the state tournaments six years in a row. In November 2014, the Grizzlies and Coach Harrell won their first 6A state championship. Congratulations, Dusti!

Craig Blackman - VFW High School Teacher of the Year
Craig Blackman, a social studies teacher at Indian River High School, was recently named the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) High School Teacher of the Year
Chesapeake Public Schools is pleased to announce that Craig Blackman, a social studies teacher at Indian River High School, was recently named the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) High School Teacher of the Year. This award recognizes exceptional teachers for their outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism to their students. Mr. Blackman now qualifies for the National VFW Award which will be selected in February. Congratulations!

Indian River Middle School Awarded Grant for Baby Grand Piano

In December 2014, the Board of Directors of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation approved and awarded a grant to Chesapeake Public Schools in the amount of $9,687.00 to purchase a new baby grand piano for Indian River Middle School. Dr. Toney L. McNair, Jr., department chair, choral director, and grant writer stated that, "receiving this is a great honor for our school district and for our school, the River. Thanks to the HRCF and the E. K. Sloane Fund, our students will now have a musical instrument that adds a more professional quality to our performances and, at the same time, engenders pride and prestige within our community."

The Hampton Roads Community Foundation is southeastern Virginia's largest grant and scholarship provider. Since its founding in 1950, the regional community foundation and its donors have provided nearly $200 million in grants and scholarships to improve life in southeastern Virginia. This grant was made from the E. K. Sloane Fund of the Foundation.

Oscar Smith High School Marching Tigers Grand Champions of Gator Bowl!
The Oscar Smith High School Marching Tigers traveled to Jacksonville, Florida to compete in the TaxSlayer Bowl Contest of Champions. In all, the Tigers earned 10 trophies and 3 plaques in taking first place in their class in both the field show and parade competitions. Combining with the 8 separate caption awards for marching, music, and general effect, the Marching Tigers earned the Sweepstakes Grand Champion Award for the show for the highest overall score for the combined events. This is the first ever national event the band has attended, competing against bands from six other states. Congratulations to the Marching Tigers and director, Mr. Jack Elgin!

Congratulations to Truitt Intermediate - Recipient of the 2015 J&A Racing Youth Fitness Initiative Award
J&A Racing announced that Truitt Intermediate School is a recipient of one of the 2015 J&A Racing Youth Fitness Initiative Awards. The Youth Fitness Initiative program was started in 2012 as a means of ensuring more deserving students would be able to participate in two of the youth running events at the Shamrock Marathon Weekend. Elementary schools have been awarded free race entries to the Operation Smile Shamrock Final Mile. Truitt will also receive coaching support and guidance for their running programs from J&A Racing staff.

Congratulations to Western Branch Middle School for being recognized as one of the 2014-2015 Balanced, Active Lifestyle Grant winners! The $1,000 Balanced, Active Lifestyle Grant awards program was created to assist local public schools in developing educational programs that support physical fitness and health education for students. The winning plans were comprehensive, unique and met key screens such as program details, execution, and post program evaluation plans. Congratulations!

Chesapeake School Board Approves the Resolution Concerning the Funding of Public Education in Virginia
Resolution Concerning the Funding of Public Education in Virginia
On December 8, 2014, the Chesapeake School Board approved a funding resolution from the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) and the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS) of which school boards are being asked to adopt. This resolution focuses on joining together to amplify our voices to the General Assembly about our need for them to invest appropriately in public education throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Trustees of the Beazley Foundation have approved a challenge grant of $125,000 to the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation for technological improvements to the Chesapeake Planetarium. The Foundation is required to raise $250,000 in matching contributions, and once the total of $375,000 is reached, the funds will be used to purchase a new digital star projector system to replace the 1960s equipment presently in the planetarium. The equipment will be utilized in the present planetarium while a new Science Center is designed, funded, and constructed over the next several years, then moved to the new location.
