2014 VSBA Green Schools Challenge
Celebrate GIS Day on November 19th by going on a virtual scavenger hunt!
Nine school divisions across the state received top awards in the 2014 Virginia School Boards Association's (VSBA) Green Schools Challenge, a friendly competition designed to encourage implementation of specific environmental policies and practical actions that reduce the carbon emissions generated by both the local school division and the broader community.

Congratulations to Chesapeake Public Schools for being recognized as a VSBA Certified Green School Division - Gold Certification!


James D. Mullins Leadership Award Recipient

Kim Pinello, principal of Hickory Elementary School, was awarded the James D. Mullins Leadership Award on Friday, November 14, 2014. This award was established in 1994 to recognize administrators who show exceptional support of reading. Congratulations, Mrs. Pinello!


VASSP 2015 Outstanding Secondary School Assistant Principal of Virginia
Brian Haughinberry
Congratulations to Brian Haughinberry, assistant principal at Grassfield High School, for being selected by the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) as the 2015 Outstanding Secondary School Assistant Principal of Virginia! Mr. Haughinberry will be presented the award on June 29, 2015, during the annual Virginia Middle and High School Principals Conference & Exposition in Roanoke, Virginia. Congratulations to Mr. Haughinberry for this leadership recognition!


Virginia Federation of the Council for Exceptional Children 2014 Teacher of the Year

The Virginia Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) recognized Anne Reilly, a fifth grade teacher at Crestwood Intermediate, as their CEC 2014 Teacher of the Year. The Teacher of the Year Award recognizes an individual who currently provides services to students with exceptional needs and their families. Congratulations, Anne!

VHSL Class 5A State Champions: Hickory High School

The Hickory High School competition cheer team is celebrating another successful season. The season started off with a second place finish at the Southeastern District Competition. The Hawks then rallied to secure their second Conference 10 Regional Championship. The season ended at the VHSL State Championships where the Hickory Hawks captured their second straight state championship in the 5A division. The Hawks posted the highest score of any team in all divisions at the state championship. The Hawks are coached by Chris Boykin and assistant coach, Tiffany Finder.

Congratulations to Grassfield High School Varsity Cheer program for earning the VHSL Class 6A Championship. This all-girl squad, coached by Ms. Dusti Harrell, also celebrates an undefeated season after winning the 2014 Southeastern District Championship, 2014 Conference 2 Championship, 2014 Region 6A South Championship, and the state title! Congratulations Grizzly Cheer!


Congratulations to the Western Branch Middle School First LEGO League Team!
Bruin Brick Builders
The Bruin Brick Builders will be representing Western Branch Middle School at the Virginia/DC First LEGO League State Competition, December 6-7, at James Madison University. The team won Tournament Champion for Division II on November 8, 2014, at the Newport News Regional Competition.

The Greenbrier Panthers LEGO Team earned two top awards at the regional tournament on Saturday, November 15. The team received the Division I Champion's Award for fully embracing the FLL Core Values while achieving excellence and innovation in both the robot game and project. The Robot Performance Award was earned for getting the highest score during the robot game.

The Trustees of the Beazley Foundation have approved a challenge grant of $125,000 to the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation for technological improvements to the Chesapeake Planetarium. The Foundation is required to raise $250,000 in matching contributions, and once the total of $375,000 is reached, the funds will be used to purchase a new digital star projector system to replace the 1960s equipment presently in the planetarium. The equipment will be utilized in the present planetarium while a new Science Center is designed, funded, and constructed over the next several years, then moved to the new location.

Bricks from the Great Bridge 4-Room School House
Bricks from the Great Bridge 4 Room School House
Bricks from the Great Bridge 4-Room School House will be available to the public beginning November 3 through December 23, 2014, at the Department of School Plants, 1021 Great Bridge Boulevard. The bricks are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to 2 per person. Bricks can be picked up Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., excluding holidays observed by the school division. For additional information, please call the Department of School Plants at 757-547-0139.

2015 Foreign Language Academies
The 2015 Governor's Summer Residential Foreign Language Academies will include full-immersion academies in French, German, and Spanish; a partial-immersion Japanese Academy; and a Latin Academy. Please note that students, current sophomores and juniors, are nominated by the Foreign Language Department in their schools and schools are limited in the number of students they may nominate. Students may not apply directly to the VDOE. Interested home-school students should submit an application to the public high school they are zoned to attend.
