Hickory Elementary School Student - 2015 FUTP60 State Ambassador
Congratulations to Brody Canning, a student from Hickory Elementary School, for being selected as a 2015 Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60) state ambassador.
Congratulations to Brody Canning, a student from Hickory Elementary School, for being selected as a 2015 Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60) state ambassador. FUTP60 is a national program founded by the National Dairy Council and National Football League, in collaboration with the United States Department of Agriculture, that empowers students to take charge in making sustainable health and wellness changes at school and in the community. Their theme is to "fuel up with good food choices, including dairy" and "to exercise for 60 minutes." Brody and Mrs. Davis, the physical education teacher at Hickory Elementary School, will be attending the 2015 Student Ambassador Summit in Chicago, Illinois in July. At this all-expense-paid conference, Brody will be trained in leadership, communication and program information to share with his school and community when he returns next year. Congratulations to Hickory Elementary School and to Brody for a job well done!

Best Communites for Music Education
Chesapeake Public Schools has received a 2015 "Best Communities for Music Education" designation presented by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. In its 16th year, the NAMM Foundation identifies districts across the nation demonstrating outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education an important part of the curriculum. The "Best Communities for Music Education" program evaluates schools and districts based on funding, staffing of highly qualified teachers, commitment to standards, and access to music instruction. Researchers at the Center for Public Partnerships & Research, Kansas (an affiliate of the University of Kansas) led the data review.

Meredith Strahan, an AVID coordinator from Oscar Smith High School, has been selected to be an AVID 2015 Summer Institute Speaker in Philadelphia this July. Ms. Strahan was selected out of more than 1,200 speaker contest entries. She will share how AVID has helped start the path to her students' success and how her experiences with AVID have helped change and define her life.

Maurice Frazier - DTE Award of Excellence
Maurice Frazier, a technology education teacher at Oscar Smith High School, was recently awarded the Distinguished Technology and Engineering Professional (DTE) Award of Excellence at the annual International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA) conference. ITEEA's Distinguished Technology and Engineering Professional designation is a coveted mark of distinction in technology and engineering education. It recognizes technology, innovation, design, and engineering educators who have demonstrated a high level of competence and professional activity in the field of technology and engineering education. This award is the highest honor that can be received in this field.

The Trustees of the Beazley Foundation have approved a challenge grant of $125,000 to the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation for technological improvements to the Chesapeake Planetarium. The Foundation is required to raise $250,000 in matching contributions, and once the total of $375,000 is reached, the funds will be used to purchase a new digital star projector system to replace the 1960s equipment presently in the planetarium. The equipment will be utilized in the present planetarium while a new Science Center is designed, funded, and constructed over the next several years, then moved to the new location.
