Chesapeake Awarded the Beazley Foundation Grant for the CPS Science/Planetarium Center Project

The Trustees of the Beazley Foundation have approved a challenge grant of $125,000 to the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation for technological improvements to the Chesapeake Planetarium. The Foundation is required to raise $250,000 in matching contributions, and once the total of $375,000 is reached, the funds will be used to purchase a new digital star projector system to replace the 1960s equipment presently in the planetarium. The equipment will be utilized in the present planetarium while a new Science Center is designed, funded, and constructed over the next several years then moved to the new location.

Chesapeake Teacher Selected for Virginia Center for Excellence in Teaching (VCET)
VCET 2014 teacher, Rose Horton
Rose Horton, from Oscar Smith High School, is one of 100 of Virginia's best teachers who was selected to attend one of four VCET innovative summer academies on the George Mason University campus in Fairfax this summer. This professional develoment program for teachers focused on classroom instruction, education policy and leadership. Horton was accepted into the Humanities & Language Arts Academy, held July 6-11. Funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Education, each of the four academies accepted 25 teachers. The free, six-day residential academies focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), interdisciplinary studies, fine arts, and the humanities and language arts.

The Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation is offering for sale DVD copies of each complete graduation ceremony. The cost of each DVD is $25.00. Proceeds from the DVD sales will be used by the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation to directly benefit CPS students and support instructional activities. Please allow four to six weeks for delivery via USPS.

New Process for Obtaining Work Permit/Employment Certificates for Students Between 14 and 16

The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry now issues work permits/employment certificates for students who are between 14 and 16 years of age. Permits are no longer issued by the Chesapeake Public School system. To obtain a work permit, please visit the Department of Labor and Industry website at http://www.doli.virginia.gov.
