Grassfield High School - Ranked One of the Top Ten Best W!SE High Schools Teaching Personal Finance
On April 19, 2017, at the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City, the 2017 ranking of the "100 Best W!SE High Schools Teaching Personal Finance" was announced. In addition to the ranking of the 100 Best schools, schools had the opportunity to rank as one of the Top Ten large, midsize, or small schools in their national network. Congratulations to Grassfield High School for being ranked as one of the Top Ten Large schools within the nation!
Chesapeake Public Schools - 2017 Best Communities for Music Education
Chesapeake Public Schools has received the 2017 Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) designation presented by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. In its 18th year, the program singles out districts for outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who have made music education part of the core curriculum. The BCME program evaluates schools and districts based on evidence of high-quality music achievement, funding, staffing of highly qualified teachers, commitment to standards, and access to music instruction. Researchers at the Center for Public Partnerships & Research, Kansas (an affiliate of the University of Kansas) led the data review.
Ryan Wieck - Chesapeake Sports Club 2017 Coach of the Year
Congratulations to Ryan Wieck, Hickory High School teacher and coach, for being recognized on April 6, 2017, at the Chesapeake Sport's Club sixth annual Jamboree as the 2017 Coach of the Year. Wieck has coached softball for 21 years at Hickory High School and has 334 wins over his career and currently ranks 4th all-time in VHSL history. His teams have won eight district conference titles, qualified for 14 consecutive regional tournament appearances, including five regional championships and three regional runner-up finishes. At the state level his teams have qualified for eight VHSL state tournament championships winning the 2008 title and producing runner-up finishes in 2015 and 2016.
Elisha "Cadillac" Harris - 900 Men Strong Scholarship and Community Service Awards Honoree and Winner
Congratulations to Cadillac Harris, Indian River High School teacher and former coach, for being recognized as the 900 Men Strong Scholarship and Community Service Awards Honoree and Winner for Making a Difference in Education.
The W.H. Gray Community Service award honoree is an individual committed to reaching out and helping others unselfishly through community service. This individual is a problem solver. Through his efforts, relationships, and grassroots programs, the nominee positively influences those with whom he comes into contact, as he engages in building a better community.
Grassfield High School - Virginia Student Council Association
Congratulations to Grassfield High School for having a student representative on the 2017-2018 board for the Virginia Student Council Association. Jillian Doerr will serve as the 2017-2018 Vice President. This is the first time that Grassfield High School has held a state office. The selection was made during the annual state conference which was held on March 24 - 26 at the Portsmouth Renaissance Hotel. Congratulations Jillian Doerr and Grassfield High School.
John Sammons - Friends of SNA-VA Award
Congratulations to Mr. John Sammons, technology integration specialist at Greenbrier Intermediate School, for receiving the Friends of SNA-VA Award from the Virginia School Nutrition Association. The Friends of SNA-VA Award is given to someone, outside of school nutrition programs, who has done extraordinary work on behalf of school nutrition programs. Mr. Sammons was recognized for his endless support and assistance of the GRI food nutrition program.
2017 Teachers of the Year
Forty-seven Chesapeake teachers, each representing their individual schools, were recognized at the Teacher of the Year Ceremony on March 16, 2017, at Indian River High School. From the forty-seven teachers, four were selected as the Elementary, Middle, High, and Chesapeake Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to these outstanding teachers!

Crestwood Intermediate - Dannon Yogurt Recipe Contest Winners
Congratulations to Crestwood Intermediate School for their winning submission in the Dannon Foodservice, Fuel UP to Play 60, and National Dairy Council Dannon Yogurt Recipe Contest! Cafeteria manager Renee Swank and students Jamie Wynne, Jordan Tesoro, and Amir Elliott created Crestwood's Island Breakfast Bar which was announced as one of the seven grand-prize winners in this nationwide contest. Their recipe features crunchy granola, creamy yogurt, and fresh fruit. In addition to winning $4000 worth of foodservice equipment for their school, their recipe will be featured on the school breakfast menu in the coming months. We are so proud of our budding chefs and wonderful cafeteria manager for their creativity!

Joy Speelman - Tidewater VFW Post 4809 2016 High School Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Joy Speelman, an Indian River High School teacher, who was recently named the Tidewater Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4809 2016 High School Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year. This award recognizes exceptional teachers for their outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism to their students.
Western Branch High School - VHSL 6A State Champions
Congratulations to the Western Branch High School girls and boys indoor track teams, coached by Claude Toukene, for sweeping the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 6A state titles for the second consecutive year. The girls team clinched their fourth consecutive Group 6A indoor title with 113 points (58 points over the second place team), and the boys team earned 81.5 points (43 points over the second place team) to claim their second consecutive Group 6A indoor title. Way to go Bruins!
Chesapeake Public Schools Custodial Advisory Committee - 2016 Educational Institution Award
The Chesapeake Public Schools Custodial Advisory Committee has been selected by the Chesapeake Environmental Improvement Council (CEIC) to recieve the 2016 Educational Institution Award. The CEIC recognizes individuals, groups, and businesses annually who help clean and beautify the city or help promote the ideas of conservation, recycling and maintaining a pristine environment. Congratulations to the Custodial Advisory Committee for their efforts to Keep Chesapeake Beautiful!
Teacher Supply Center - Grand Opening February 1
On February 1, 2017, the Chesapeake Public Schools Educational Foundation will open Chesapeake's first Teacher Supply Center. The Teacher Supply Center is located at Deep Creek Middle School where teachers can shop for supplies for their classrooms at no cost. Hours of operation are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Teacher Workdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Teachers may shop for ten items once a month. A "Give One, Take One" table is also available for teachers to donate/exchange items they no longer use. Teachers must bring their CPS identification badge to participate.

Chesapeake Public Schools is happy to announce the availability of Office 365 Pro Plus at no charge to all Chesapeake Public School (CPS) students for use on personal computer equipment. The licensing allows the installation of the software on up to five compatible PC and/or MAC computers. In addition, a simplified version of the software may be installed on up to five tablet/mobile devices. The license will remain active as long as the division maintains this agreement and as long as the individual is a CPS student. Once a student withdraws from the division, they are no longer legally licensed to use the software.

Heather Waild - Virginia State Reading Association Reading Teacher of the Year
Chesapeake Reading Council's Chesapeake Reading Teacher of the Year, Heather Waild, has been selected as the Virginia State Reading Association (VSRA) Reading Teacher of the Year. Ms. Waild is an exceptional first grade teacher at Portlock Primary School who is dedicated to her students. The VSRA has recognized Ms. Waild for her many contributions to literacy such as earning $2,000 in grant money, maintaining a reading resource blog for teachers, serving as past president of the CRC, and making presentations at VSRA conferences. Congratulations to Ms. Waild!
Great Bridge High School Wresting VHSL Class 4A State Champions
Congratulations Great Bridge High School wrestling! The Great Bridge High School wrestling team, along with Coach Matt Small, took the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 4A state title on Saturday, February 18 at the Salem Civic Center near Roanoke, VA. This is the first wrestling state championship the school has captured since 2006. Congratulations Wildcats!
Dusti Harrell - VHSL Group 6A Cheer Coach of the Year
Congratulations to Dusti Harrell, Grassfield High School teacher and coach, for being selected as the Virginia High School League's Group 6A 2016 Cheer Coach of the Year. This is the second time Coach Harrell has earned this prestige recognition as she was the VHSL 6A Cheer Coach of the Year in 2014. Harrell has coached for 18 years and has successfully led the Grassfield Grizzlies cheer team since the school opened in 2007 with three back-to-back VHSL 6A state titles (2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017).

James D. Mullins Leadership Award Recipient - Shawnia Smiley
The Chesapeake Reading Council presented Mrs. Shawnia Smiley, principal of Norfolk Highlands Primary, the James D. Mullins Leadership Award which recognizes administrators who show exceptional support of reading. Mrs. Smiley led her school from being designated as a Focus School to regaining full accreditation. The emphasis on building literacy and the love of reading created a culture of excellence which led to student success. Congratulations to Mrs. Smiley!
Heather Waild - Chesapeake Reading Teacher of the Year
Heather Waild, a first grade teacher at Portlock Primary School, has been selected as the Chesapeake Reading Teacher of the Year. Ms. Waild is passionate about literacy and shares that love with her students ensuring that they have the necessary skills to be successful. She has been awarded $2,000 through various grants to improve literacy in Chesapeake and is the Past-President of the Chesapeake Reading Council. In addition to promoting literacy in Chesapeake, Ms. Waild shares her literacy expertise through her literacy-based blog and by providing teacher training at Virginia State Reading Association (VSRA) conferences. Congratulations to Ms. Waild!
VSBA Platinum Certified Green School Division
Chesapeake Public Schools is proud to have been named a 2016 VSBA Platinum Certified Green School Division. The honor is given to school divisions that implemented new actions and adopted new policies that earn the division "green points."

Great Bridge High Field Hockey VHSL Class 4A State Champions
Congratulations Great Bridge High School Field Hockey! The Great Bridge High School field hockey team, along with Coach Katie Duke and assistant coaches Jim Duke and Dana Brookover, captured their first state field hockey title with a sudden-victory shootout win. The lady Wildcats finished their season with a 22-0 record, were the Conference 17 champions, and the Region 4A East champions. Congratulations Wildcats!
Oscar Smith High School - Peter Smith - First Ever Male Cross Country State Champion from Chesapeake
On November 12, Oscar Smith High School's Peter Smith won the Boys Cross Country State Championship for Division 6A with a time of 15:22. Congratulations to Peter and his coach, Rob Kirkman!
Wayne Martin - Chesapeake Sports Club Legends of Honor Inductee
Congratulations to Wayne Martin, director of student services, who was inducted into the Chesapeake Sports Club Legends of Honor for his athletic achievements and outstanding leadership at Kempsville High School, Old Dominion University, Great Bridge High School, and Chesapeake Public Schools. The Chesapeake Sports Club Legends of Honor Award was established to recognize and honor former outstanding athletes, coaches, and individuals for their athletic performance, leadership, and/or contributions to athletics in Chesapeake, including the areas formed by the city of Chesapeake in 1963.

The Grassfield High School Varsity Cheer program, along with Coach Dusti Harrell, has earned their third consecutive VHSL 6A Championship. They also won, for the fourth consecutive year, the Monitor Merrimac Conference and were regional champions for the seventh time. Congratulations Grizzly Cheer!
